I've recently purchased this book for my young family members who are transitioning into middle school, and I must say, it has been quite engaging for them. As an age-appropriate book, it combines humor and satire to depict the realities of middle school life, making it relatable for young readers. The story revolves around the main character, Rafe, and his not-so-wise decision to break every rule in the school's conduct book. Although I personally found Rafe's character to be unlikable due to his lack of interest in having a successful school year or making friends, the young readers in my family seemed to enjoy the book and even requested more books from the series.

But when they face illness, monsoon season, and losing their safe haven, they have to decide whether to seek the help of adults or continue their life of precarious freedom. If you want to share messages of bravery, disability awareness, and found family with your child, then this is the one to choose.

Wolf Hollow
Top Choice for Teachers
Touching on similar themes asTo Kill a Mockingbird, this is a great one for teachers to introduce to their classrooms. Kids can take away so much from studying this story which has won multiple awards.

This book does have a dark side, but it's not evil - just sad and thought-provoking. While the story may not be suitable for all younger readers, it certainly grabbed my attention and kept me hooked until the very end. My experience with this book has been quite enlightening, as it provides a comprehensive overview of history leading up to the 13th Amendment and National Freedom Day. However, I must admit that I found the inclusion of imagery and references to the BLM organization quite concerning, as it has been linked to protests that turned violent and caused damage to small businesses. On the other hand, as an Afro-Latinx individual who takes pride in her heritage, I appreciate the book's focus on the resilience of Black and brown ancestors. The beautiful illustrations and rich content make this an excellent addition to any library and classroom, and the timelines in the back help summarize and organize the information.

Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
Opens Up Important Conversations
Personal Perspective
Best book I've read in a while, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, truly captures the harsh realities of Southern white society's unjust treatment of black people during the Depression era. The strong and relatable characters in this story make it even more engaging, teaching valuable lessons about taking a stand against injustice and staying true to oneself. I could feel the emotions of the characters and found myself rooting for them throughout the book. This powerful and thought-provoking story is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the complexities of race, family, and identity during a difficult time in American history.
Last but not least, I have this powerful conversation starter if you want to talk to your child about racism, justice, and friendship. This classic novel follows Cassie, who is part of the Logan family, as they work to save their farm and independence in the face of racial injustice.
Set during The Great Depression, children will learn about racism, the Jim Crow Act, and speaking out for what’s right. Told through the perspective of the outspoken Cassie, this is an engaging book for children. I’ve also heard it’s fantastic on audiobook, so if your child prefers that, this is a good download!

How To Choose Books for 11-Year-Olds
If your child is an avid reader, by age 11, they’ll have literacy skills that resemble adults’ (1). This doesn’t mean that adult (or even young adult) literature is suitable for them, though. Give them stories they’ll understand (and enjoy) by following the milestones for their age (2).
Remember that every child is different and learns at a different pace. So while many children are reading for knowledge or are able to summarize a text, it’s okay if your child isn’t quite there yet.
Reading for Knowledge
By this age, children no longer need overly simplified texts. They read to expand their knowledge and are ready to delve into longer, more serious, or complex stories.
Intention
Eleven-year-olds can read purposefully for pleasure, education, or other reasons.
Reasoning
Your child should be able to follow a story and retell or summarize the events in order. They’ll understand the meaning of stories and be able to express what they’ve read.
Exploration
Eleven-year-olds are ready to explore different genres. They can also understand stories with more depth and interpret what they’ve read as they relate to it. Try to widen their knowledge by introducing them to different styles.
