“Forget everything and everyone; enjoy the here and now, you are the most important.” My massage therapist puts her hands to heart center and gracefully bows her head after welcoming me with this opening mantra.

I’m at the Grand Velas Spa Riviera Nayarit, in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. My senses are overwhelmed with harmony as my therapist holds up rosemary or mint. She invites me to inhale each scent to decide which I should use for my ceremony. Here at the Grand Velas Spa, the treatments are called ceremonies in celebration of the guest.

I signal the mint scent to aid in my relaxation. She mentions to me that these ingredients are grown in the organic garden on the property. I am taking part in a ritual carefully established by the spa’s manager, Silvia Velasco, and the staff. This welcome ritual consists of balancing my heart and mind by using the four elements of nature: earth, air, fire and water.

Each spa guest has a unique exclusive experience, as each ceremony is personally catered to the individual’s needs and desires. My masseuse asks if I would like to select a music choice or would prefer silence. I tell her that the gentle eastern Asian meditation music overhead is perfect.

Before my treatment, I arrived an hour early to sink into the hydrotherapy lounge.

Immediately upon arrival my personal valet handed me a glass of crisp citrus water. I was then escorted quietly to each hydrotherapy station. There are six stations, not including the cool rain shower which they suggest you use in between.

My favorite was the eucalyptus crystal steam room. As I stepped into the steam room, I was emotionally overwhelmed with a wave of healing eucalyptus. My eyes focused thorough the steam on a crystal rock in the center of the room. Quartz crystals can transform life energy into electro-magnetic energy, but also, it is claimed, aid in healing.

My personal valet retrieves me from the steam room and guides me to the bubbling hot bath. I sit against a jetted chair and the jets hit my calves. A gentle calf massage releases my tension. With each hydrotherapy station, I am elevated a little bit higher as my stress disappears and I am transported to an emotional dream.

My guide smiles as she hands me a glass of chlorophyll water. The green drink replenishes my insides. Chlorophyll is a natural chemical found in green vegetables, herbs and algae; it can support a healthy body and mind.

After 45 minutes of hydrotherapy, I am guided to a bamboo bed. The walls of the room are crisp white, with vast open sky light ceilings. The windows are decorated with sweeping white linens. The entire atmosphere feels very light, and heavenly.

The ripple of the bubbles rhythmically bounces to the beat of the overhead music. The sounds of eastern Asian chimes gently aid in the healing and relaxation ritual. The smell of mint floats through the air. My guide places cucumbers on my eyes and tucks a warm cushioned neck pillow behind my head. All of this pampering and attention, and my massage treatment had not even started.

My ceremony treatment is the Cora Massage, which is a highly energetic massage that stimulates sensorial perceptions. Using sound created by natural instruments like the rain stick, my senses are whisked away to a new plane.

My therapist applies the perfect pressure to my lightly burnt skin. After 90 minutes, my nervous travel tension has disappeared.

The Grand Velas Spa dedicates extraordinary attention to ensure each guest is not only cared for, but also made to feel uniquely special. The spa experience goes much deeper than “a feel good treatment.” As I step out of my treatment room, I am handed a cup of warm tea, and I recognize a subtle shift has occurred. Not only has my body restored its balance, but I have emotional harmony and intellectual and spiritual wellness.
