What Do You Need To make Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes?

Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes (3)

I love how I can easily make these mouthwatering Sloppy Joes with just a couple of simple ingredients.

What you need:

  • Lean ground beef
  • Butter
  • Yellow onion
  • Green bell pepper
  • Brown mushrooms
  • Ketchup
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Kosher salt
  • Fresh ground black pepper
  • Cornstarch
  • Beef broth
  • Provolone Cheese Slices chopped
  • Brioche hamburger buns

To make this recipe gluten-free (you should use these ingredients instead):

The original Worcestershire sauce is dangerous because it contained barley malt vinegar. But Worcestershire sauce comes in a wide range of variations, including gluten-free varieties. If you don’t have gluten-free Worcestershire sauce, consider the following substitutes:

  • Fish sauce
  • Gluten-free soy sauce
  • Or make homemade Worcestershire sauce by mixing soy sauce (tamari), ketchup, fish sauce, and tamarind paste.

Beef broth made from only beef and water is gluten-free, but not all beef broth is made the same way. Make sure to check the label before buying. There are varieties of gluten-free beef broth available in the market, such as Swanson Canned Beef Broth.

Swap Brioche hamburger buns with gluten-free hamburger buns.

Ingredients

Scale

2 tbsp butter

1 small yellow onion diced

8 oz. brown mushrooms minced

2 tbsp ketchup

1 small green bell pepper diced

1 lb lean ground beef

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tbsp cornstarch

1 cup beef broth

6 brioche hamburger buns

8 oz. Provolone Cheese Slices chopped (use 6oz if you don’t want it very cheesy)

1/2 tsp Kosher salt

1/2 tsp fresh ground black pepper

Instructions

In a large cast-iron skillet, cook the ground beef, breaking the meat up into chunks as it cooks until a deep brown crust appears.

Mix and continue to cook further until about 50 percent or so of the beef has a deep brown crust.

Set the beef aside. If desired, leave the grease in the skillet.

In the same skillet with the beef grease, add the butter, onions, bell peppers, and onions. Cook for about 1 to 2 minutes, undisturbed. Then, stir and continue to cook for 1 to 2 minutes more before stirring again.

Then, return the beef to the pan.

Whisk the beef broth and cornstarch in a small cup until well-mixed.

Into the pan, add the ketchup. Next, add the Worcestershire sauce and season with salt and black pepper. Then, pour in the beef broth/cornstarch mixture.

Continue to cook for additional 3 to 5 minutes until the mixture is just a bit liquidy.

Turn the heat off, then add the provolone cheese.

Serve the Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes toasted brioche buns. Enjoy!

Use gluten-free hamburger buns instead of Brioche hamburger buns.
